Matthias Ginter has been speculated for months after making public that he will not extend his contract expiring to Borussia Mönchengladbach. There may be a sensational return of the central defender one of his ex-clubs.
According to "Bild" and "Matthias Ginter Bild", Matthias Ginter will move back to SC Freiburg. The deal should be announced shortly, it is said.
Gladbach manager Roland Virkus was only elicited on "DAZN" on Monday evening: "Matthias and I spoke this morning, he told me what he would do." It is with Ginter to announce his own decision.
At SC Freiburg, the German national player's football career once started. As an eleven-year-old, the Freiburg-born went to the young talent center of the Breisgau club and then went through all junior teams there. In the U19 he was trained by today's head coach Christian Streich, together they celebrated the win of the junior cup in 2010/11.
A season later, Ginter made his debut in the Bundesliga for the first time, and until he moved to Borussia Dortmund in summer 2014, he had developed a regular place at SC Freiburg. After three years at BVB, the central defender moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Matthias Ginter would be the direct replacement for DFB colleague Nico Schlotterbeck at SC Freiburg, who will be switched to Borussia Dortmund in summer. BVB officially announced this transfer on Monday. Since Ginter's contract expires in Gladbach at the end of June, Freiburg would not have to pay a transfer.
In the past few weeks, Ginter's future has been the subject of wild speculation. First, the 28-year-old was traded at Bayern, where Niklas Süle's squad square becomes free. He is also said to have aroused interest at Inter Milan. Most recently, it was said that Premier League club Aston Villa could strike in summer.
The defense professional itself recently confirmed that a decision is imminent. "It won't be long before I say something," Ginter told Bild.
